The Amazing Race Against Time
Sunday September 28th, 2008
Appleby College, Lakeshore Road, Oakville
WHAT WAS THE AMAZING RACE: It was an Oakville
wide event involving teens and young adults, wanting to make a
difference in the lives of others by raising funds for the Stephen Lewis
Foundation.
HOW DID IT WORK: Teams of 4 individuals competed
for three hours in a series of exciting and challenging tasks around the
Oakville area. The registration cost was $25.00 per participant per
team, and each participant was required to raise at least $75.00 in
pledges and donations.
-
The mandatory tasks were designed to challenge
individuals’ mental and physical capabilities, encouraging teamwork
amongst the groups. Each task also involved an educational component
about the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout Africa and various ways in
which to combat the epidemic.
-
In addition to the mandatory tasks teams were able
to collect extra points by performing small optional challenges
encouraging creative and strategic thinking amongst the
participants. Teams had to choose which of these smaller challenges
they would like to complete keeping in mind that they had to
complete the “race” before the three hour deadline.
-
Points were awarded for completed tasks, for their
efficiency in completing the race, and for the amount of money
raised. All points were tallied at the end of the race and the
winning team was awarded a small prize at the closing ceremonies of
the event. Ilana Landsberg Lewis from the Stephen Lewis Foundation
was on hand to award the prizes.

Time, Talent & Treasure Auction
A Silent Auction of celebrity autographed themed pillows and a Live
Auction of a variety of Time, Talent and Treasure
St. John's United Church
Saturday, October 18, 2008 - 7:30 p.m.
The members of St. John’s United Church, under the leadership of their
Power of One Team, came together once again to make a difference in our
world. With the example of Sally Armstrong, a long time member of the
congregation, The Power of One – Outreach Team has worked hard over the
years to follow Gandhi’s philosophy, “You must be the change you wish to
see in the world.”
Projects such as Canadian Foodgrains Project, Habitat for Humanity, Kerr
Street Ministries, the new playground at Oakwood School and a Speaker
Series on various social justice topics have been and are presently
actively being pursued.
On hearing about Oakville’s Campaign to raise a million or more for
HIV/AIDS we definitely wanted to be involved especially as Sally
Armstrong is the honorary chair of the campaign! The overwhelming needs
of millions of African children and grandmothers who support them
strikes the heart of every compassionate person! Currently 22.5 million
people live with HIV in Africa of which 61% are woman and there are 11.4
million orphans! SLF funds 140 grass roots initiatives in 15 countries
across sub-Saharan Africa.
The Time, Talent and Treasure Auction became our way to contribute
something to this wonderful challenge. |
